Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Everett Teaford was perfect for 5 1/3 innings and Northwest Arkansas bunched three runs in the sixth off Erick Abreu as the Naturals defeated Corpus Christi 3-1 Sunday before 6,265.
Both clubs are 6-4.
Teaford became the Texas League's first three-game winner. The 2006 12th-round selection from Georgia Southern threw 82 pitches, 59 for strikes. He was charged with two hits, a run and struck out five.
Teaford's pitch count through three innings was 35. He tossed 14 in the fourth, all for strikes.
The Hooks managed just four hits off Teaford and Federico Castaneda (3 1/3 innings), who notched his second save.
Northwest Arkansas threatened in the fifth with consecutive one-out singles by Chris McConnell, Derrick Robinson and Johnny Giavotella. The Hooks ducked trouble when Koby Clemens and Wladimir Sutil collaborated on a 3-6-3 double-play ball off the bat of Clint Robinson.
Corpus Christi starter Fernando Abad left after five frames, six hits, a walk and two strikeouts. Forty-eight of his 73 pitches were strikes.
His relief, Abreu, quickly ran into trouble. Ernesto Mejia stroked a lead-off single, Manny Pina walked on four pitches and Kurt Mertins lashed a two-run triple to center field. Paulo Orlando's single to left off Chia-Jen Lo past a drawn-in infield scored Mertins for a 3-0 Naturals lead.
Corpus Christi answered in its half of the sixth by breaking up Teaford's gem and into the scoring column. Brian Esposito tripled over the head of Derrick Robinson in center and Marcos Cabral singled up the middle.
Mertins finished with three hits, Giavotella and Cabral two.
Sergio Perez (1-0) takes the mound at 7:05 Monday against Northwest Arkansas' Aaron Crow (0-0). The first 1,500 children 12-and-under pick up a Hooks kickball from at&t.
