Tri-City Storm News Release
KEARNEY, Neb. - Next season, the Niagara University Purple Eagles will add Tri-City Storm goalie Carsen Chubak to their lineup on the ice. The Storm's first-and-only year goalie has committed to play for Niagara following this season in the United States Hockey League.
Chubak, a 20-year old from Prince Albert, Sask., is glad to have his commitment out of the way, so he can focus on helping the Storm earn their first playoff berth in three years.
"It's pretty nice to finally have this commitment over with, which takes the monkey off my back," said Chubak. "It allows me to focus on-and-off the ice about this team (the Storm) and not worrying about my plans for next season."
Currently, Chubak holds the Storm record for saves in a season (1,123 saves) with seven regular-season games remaining. His record is 19-15-6 with a save percentage of .902 and a 3.00 goal-against average in 44 games played.
"Niagara is a beautiful college campus and is right next to Niagara Falls, which is breathtaking to see. Plus, the proximity to the Canadian border was another piece that made me feel more comfortable (with the decision), knowing that they have a solid contingent of Canadian-born players."
Niagara University is a NCAA Division I college hockey program that is located in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Next season the program will be competing in the Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA), as the College Hockey America (CHA) conference is disbanding after this season.
"The hockey program has been a factory for professional hockey players and has fared well against other college programs." says Chubak, who has two shutouts this season. "It was appealing to see both coaches were goalies during their playing days and are well educated in the position."
The hockey program at the university was not the only thing that excites the former British Columbia Hockey League All-Star.
"They have a strong business management program that has pride in their business education, which excites me to know that I'm going to a place that is reputable in something that has interested me for awhile."
Before joining the Storm, Chubak led his team last season to the league finals with the BCHL's Powell River Kings.
"Carsen has been a big reason why we have had success this season, and he has the opportunity to become a tremendous goalie for Niagara as he moves on in his hockey endeavors," said Head Coach/General Manager Drew Schoneck. "We are extremely proud of his decision and we look forward to the rest of the season with him."
With Chubak's commitment, Tri-City now has 13 players who are committed to NCAA Division I schools. Tucker Brockett (Princeton University), Anthony DeCenzo (University of Vermont), Radoslav Illo (Bemidji State University), Nate Jensen (Mercyhurst College), Luke McManus (University of Minnesota-Duluth), Brett Mohler (Bowling Green State University), Michael Montrose (Bowling Green State University), Cody Murphy (Miami University-Ohio), Rick Pinkston (Dartmouth College), Tyler Pistone (Army - U.S. Military Academy), Jaden Schwartz (Colorado College) and Maxwell Tardy (University of Minnesota-Duluth).
