Saginaw Spirit News Release

(Sault Ste. Marie, ON) The Saginaw Spirit earned a point despite suffering a 3-2 shootout loss to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Wednesday night. Jordan Skellett tallied his sixtieth assist of the season, tying the team's record of most assists scored in a single season. The record of sixty assists in a single season was previously set by alumni Tyler Haskins in the 2006-2007 season. Saginaw's goal scoring front saw markers from Ivan Telegin and Cody Sol.

The bottom of the OHL Western Conference standings continue to be hotly contested entering the final week of the regular season. The Spirit have 71 points and a record of 32-27-4-3, and with two games remaining in the regular season the team finds itself currently sitting in seventh place. The Erie Otters (66 games played), who boast the standings tie breaker over Saginaw courtesy a better head-to-head record of 4-0-0-0 in the regular season series between the two teams, are in sixth place with 71 points. The Greyhounds (66 games played) are in fifth place with 75 points, while at the other end of the playoff contending teams the Guelph Storm (65 games played) are sitting in eighth with 68 points.

Saginaw took control early in the game with goals in the first and second period. Center Ivan Telegin opened scoring with a goal at 11:08 in the first, courtesy assists from winger Josh Shalla and center Jordan Skellett. Defenseman Cody Sol extended Saginaw's lead to 2-0 with a shorthanded goal at the 6:18 mark of the second period, with the lone assist being awarded to winger Mitch Fillman. The Greyhounds evened up the contest in the third, with winger Trevor Morbeck moving the score to 2-1 with a goal from center Nick Cousins 1:50 into the period. Center Brett Thompson scored the tying goal with a power play marker at 11:43, moving the score to 2-2. Defenseman Jacob Muzzin and winger Jordan Nolan assisted on the goal.

The two squads entered a four-on-four overtime but after 5:00 minutes of scoreless action the contest proceeded to a shootout anchored by Spirit goalie Edward Pasquale and Greyhounds netminder Robin Lehner. Both teams fielded three sets of shooters before the shootout saw its first goal. Brett Thompson, Myles McCauley and Nick Cousins missed for the Greyhounds, and likewise Vincent Trocheck, Jordan Hill and Michael Sgarbossa missed for the Spirit. Jordan Nolan was able to give the Soo a 1-0 advantage in the shootout, however Jordan Skellett quickly answered for Saginaw with a goal of his own. The scoresheet momentarily reset but it was rookie Daniel Catenacci who scored what would be the winning goal in the shootout seconds later. There was hope after Spirit shooter Garret Ross appeared to have scored for Saginaw to extend the action. However a lengthy review by the video booth declared it a no-goal, resulting in a 3-2 Greyhounds victory.

Saginaw's Pasquale earned 33 saves on 36 shots, with Sault Ste. Marie's Lehner notching 31 saves on 33 shots.
