Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans are teaming up with local television stations WMBF and WBTW to introduce a unique promotion for the 2010 season. Between Monday, March 8 and Wednesday, March 31, fans can log onto MyrtleBeachPelicans.com and vote for their favorite local meteorologist to be immortalized as a bobblehead to be given away on August 20 at BB&T Coastal Field. Each station will select a charity of its choice, and the Pelicans will make a donation to both upon the announcement of the winner. The contenders in the Pelicans' contest are WBTW Chief Meteorologist Frank Johnson and WMBF Chief Meteorologist Rob Hatchell.
A native of Florence, South Carolina, Hatchell earned his bachelor's degree from UNC-Charlotte and a graduate degree from Mississippi State. His first job in TV meteorology came with WFXL-TV in Albany, Georgia. Three years later, Rob bolted for the Alabama capital, joining WFSA 12 News in Montgomery before his moving to WMBF in May 2008. He and his wife Kelly have one daughter, Caroline, and a baby boy on the way this June. WMBF's charity of choice for the 2010 Meteorologist Matchup is the United Way. "I think everyone would like to see themselves as an action figure," Hatchell said. "I guess this is as close as I'll ever get. Seriously though, the honor is in representing the United Way who help so many people in our area with a hand up. I hope we can take home the prize and hand over the generous donation from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to a great organization where we know it will be put to good use with the United Way."
With nearly a decade and a half of experience in the industry, Johnson came to Myrtle Beach from KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City. There he earned his stripes in the severe weather department while working in the heart of Tornado Alley. Johnson's previous job was no easier as a meteorologist and tornado chaser with KVII-TV in Amarillo, Texas. The Penn State University graduate got his first experience with hurricanes while with KBMT-TV along the Texas Gulf Toast. He got his start with KREX-TV in Grand Junction, Colorado. "I'm excited about taking part and helping raise money for the local Red Cross - News 13's designated charity if we win," Johnson said. "Cecil Chandler has his own bobblehead, so maybe my time has come." WBTW has chosen the Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross as its charity for the contest.
The Pelicans open the 2010 season in Myrtle Beach when the Wilmington Blue Rocks visit BB&T Coastal Field on Thursday, April 8. Single-game, Pelicans Flex Books, mini-plans, and season tickets are on sale now along with tickets for the 2010 California-Carolina All-Star Game June 22.
