St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (March 5, 2010) - Amateur baseball has played an important role in Minnesota's rich baseball history. The St. Paul Saints will continue a three-year tradition of playing a local amateur team in its home ballpark, barnstorming their way to Chaska and Minnetonka for exhibition games.
As the Saints gear up for their May 13 regular season opener, their pre-season schedule will be highlighted by these two games outside the friendly confines of Midway Stadium. On Saturday, May 8 the Saints will take on the River Valley All-Stars at Athletic Park in Chaska at 6:00 p.m. The following day, Sunday, May 9 the Saints take on the Riverwiew League All-Stars at Minnetonka Veterans Field at 1:00 p.m. Both contests will help raise money for these historic leagues and ballparks.
As part of both these games the Saints will take their show on the road. All of the sights, sounds and humorous moments experienced at Midway Stadium will be captured during these two events. Mudonna, the Saints two-legged mascot, will bring a smile to kids' faces, fans can sing along with Saints ushertainer Seigo Masabuchi and the staple of every Saints game, the between-innings promotions, will leave fans laughing in the aisles.
Chaska's Athletic Park is celebrating 60 years. On February 16, 1950 a vote was taken at the Chaska Legion Club to select the location of a new ballpark in Chaska. In 1955, Athletic Park was selected as site of the State Amateur Baseball Tournament. Now, 60 years later, the field has entertained thousands and was named "Field of the Year" in 1998 and has hosted four State Tournaments (1950, 1988, 1998, 2008).
Veterans Field is located on the campus of Minnetonka High School in Minnetonka. The recently upgraded synthetic-turf ballpark is home to the Minnetonka Millers Baseball club, the nine-time Class "A" Champions out of the Riverview League as well as the Minnetonka Millers. The field was built and funded in 2005 by the Minnetonka Diamond Club. The field was named Veterans Field to honor those who have served and to foster the sense of community between youth, baseball, softball and veterans. It is the only high school turf field in the state of Minnesota.
The Saints began their barnstorming tour of amateur ballparks in 2008 when they celebrated the 100th Anniversary of Jack Ruhr Field in Miesville taking on the Miesville Midhens. Last year they played at the same field against the Cannon Valley League All-Stars.
