Phoenix Mercury News Release

PHOENIX -The Phoenix Mercury is holding tryouts for its official all-male practice squad on Saturday, March 27 from 1-5 p.m. at US Airways Center. Men will compete against other men from around the Valley for a spot on the 15-person squad, who will scrimmage and train with 2009 Finals MVP Diana Taurasi and the two-time WNBA Champions at select practices from April through August.

Men interested in trying out must be at least 18-years-old. Those selected to the team will receive a pair of basketball shoes and tickets to a Suns and Mercury game.

"I encourage any man who thinks he is on the same level or even thinks he can outplay the women from the Mercury to put his skills to the test and tryout for the practice team," said Mercury's Head Coach Corey Gaines. "The men who are able to stay on pace at the tryouts will definitely be helpful to my players."

The tryouts will consist of full court scrimmaging on the official Mercury and Suns practice court as well as drills to test basketball skills. Gaines, a former NBA player, will run the tryouts with the help of assistant coach and former WNBA player Bridget Pettis and General Manager and member of the Naismith Hall of Fame Ann Meyers Drysdale.

Registration for the tryouts is open through March 25 on phoenixmercury.com. All attendees will receive a boxed lunch and complimentary T-shirt at the tryouts on March 27.

The Phoenix Mercury has been providing affordable and entertaining basketball in the Valley for 13 seasons. The two-time WNBA Championship team will begin its title defense on May 15 at US Airways Center against the Los Angeles Sparks with tip off set for 11 a.m. Lower level tickets are available for as little as $10 a game for the 18-game season and can be purchased on phoenixmercury.com or by calling 602-252-WNBA.
