Mercury Assistant Coach To Be Honored At Southeastern Conference Tournament

PHOENIX - Phoenix Mercury assistant coach Bridget Pettis will be named to the 2010 class of SEC Greats at the SEC Women's Basketball Tournament March 4 - 7 at The Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga.

Former student-athletes from all 12 Southeastern Conference member institutions will be honored. Each honoree will be introduced during halftime of their team's first game of the tournament; all 12 individuals will also be introduced as a group between games of the second session on Friday, March 6.

"I'm grateful to be recognized for my accomplishments as a student-athlete at University of Florida and am flattered to be receiving the recognition in the company of the 11 other outstanding and deserving former SEC athletes," said Pettis.

"We are excited to again showcase the talent and dedication in women's athletics in the Southeastern Conference," SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said. "Honoring these former standouts gives the conference the opportunity to thank those who helped establish the rich women's athletic tradition in our conference."

This is the tenth year of the Greats program. The other student-athletes in the 2010 class includes: Andree' Pickens Houston, Alabama (Gymnastics); Shameka Christon, Arkansas (Basketball); Cicely "CC" Hayden, Auburn (Basketball); Lady Hardmon Grooms, Georgia (Basketball); Jocelyn Mills Lyons, Kentucky (Basketball); Seimone Augustus, LSU (Basketball); Peggie Gillom-Granderson, Ole Miss (Basketball); LaToya Thomas, Mississippi State (Basketball); Ashley Edlund Heidtke, South Carolina (Volleyball); Nikki McCray, Tennessee (Basketball); Chantelle Anderson, Vanderbilt (Basketball).

In 2006, the Mercury included Pettis in a permanent fixture in the US Airways Center as a tribute to four of the organization's pillars since its inception in 1997. The banner that hangs in the rafters features photographs of the first three players ever to join the organization - forward Jennifer Gillom and guards Michele Timms and Pettis - and the original Head Coach and General Manager, Cheryl Miller.

The Phoenix Mercury has been providing affordable and entertaining basketball in the Valley for 13 seasons.
