St. Vincent Staves Off Ice Flyers 4-3

The Ice Flyers stayed in the game, but could never take a lead against Fayetteville, losing to the FireAntz 4-3 in Pensacola Thursday night. Guy St. Vincent made 53 saves in the Fayetteville victory, and the three Ice Flyers goals were scored by Lorne Misita, Joey Hughes, and Chris Rebernik. Fayetteville jumped out in front in the first period and never let the Ice Flyers lead.

A breakaway spelled trouble for the Ice Flyers at 8:50 in the first period. Brett McConnachie broke loose and scored unassisted after sliding a shot into the lower left corner of the net. The 1-0 Fayetteville lead held until a medley of powerplays for the Ice Flyers. With six seconds remaining on a man-advantage, Mark Hinz swept a pass to Lorne Misita who redirected the puck into the goal, tying the game at 17:37. The tie game held into the first intermission.

The FireAntz came out in a flurry in the second period, lighting up the Ice Flyers for two goals. Robert Sich extended his single-season goal record with his 49th of the year at 2:02. Four minutes later Emery Olauson popped the puck in the goal and the FireAntz had a two goal lead. The advantage was diminished at 7:48 when Joey Hughes lit up the Hangar with his eighth goal of the year. Pensacola continued to battle, but the second period ended with Fayetteville up 3-2.

Fayetteville extended their lead at 7:42 in the third period. Brett McConnachie scored his second goal of the game with Needham assisting. The 4-2 lead held late into the period, forcing the Ice Flyers to pull their goalie. With an extra attacker, Chris Rebernik scored at 17:59. Joey Hughes and Matt Whitehead were the catalysts on the play. Despite a late powerplay, the Ice Flyers couldn?t close the gap, losing to Fayetteville 4-3. Guy St. Vincent was tres magnifique in goal, making 53 saves on the night. Ryan Scott made 24 saves of his own for the Ice Flyers.

Pensacola returns to action tomorrow night and hosts the Knoxville Ice Bears. Both teams are tied for fourth place in the SPHL, and the inaugural ?Weiner Dog Race? game is set to start at 7:05 p.m. Along with special jerseys and dachshunds racing at intermission, the Ice Flyers are accepting donations for the Humane Society before the game. Everyone who donates will receive a raffle ticket, with one lucky donator winning a replica of the Weiner Dog Racing jerseys the Ice Flyers will wear for the game.
