Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN, NB --- The Saint John Sea Dogs suffered their tenth regulation loss of the season on Saturday night, dropping a 3-1 decision to the Shawinigan Cataractes in front of nearly five thousand fans at Harbour Station.
Cataractes goaltender Marc-Antoine Gélinas made 32 saves on 33 shots faced in his return to the Port City, picking up the 21st save of his overage campaign in the process. Anaheim Ducks prospect Marco Cousineau, meanwhile, suffered his first defeat in over a month between the pipes for the Sea Dogs, making 18 stops on the evening in a losing effort.
Michaël Bournival, Antoine Houde-Caron, and Philippe Paradis all scored for the visitors in the upset victory, while Nicholas Pard tallied the lone marker of the match for the home team.
The lone goal of Saturday's opening frame came in the form of a slot-launched one-timer off the stick of Shawinigan winger Michaël Bournival in the fifth minute of play. Nicholas Pard tied things up at one apiece early in the second period, banging home his 14th goal of the year from the side of the net during a Saint John power play. Nathan Beaulieu and Stanislav Galiev both earned assists on Pard's man-up marker, which established a new single-season team scoring record (266 goals).
The Cataractes then took a 2-1 lead at the 13:21 mark of the middle frame when Antoine Houde-Caron finished off an odd-man rush by firing a low shot to the back of the Sea Dogs' net. Cousineau came up with a nice sliding pad save late in the stanza to deny a crease-hovering Michaël Bournival of a tap-in goal and keep his team within immediate striking distance of their opponents as Saturday's showdown reached the forty minute mark.
Saint John outshot Shawingan 13-3 during regulation's final frame, but Gélinas was able to keep the puck out of the net despite facing intense pressure throughout the closing twenty minutes of play. Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Philippe Paradis added an empty-net goal for the Cataractes at the 59:16 mark of the contest, sealing the victory for his team in doing so.
Up next for the Sea Dogs is a Sunday afternoon showdown with the Oceanic at Harbour Station. The puck drops at 4pm as Saint John looks to complete a sweep of their season series with the Oceanic.
