Bums Sign Two From Tryout

Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

Traverse City MI-The Traverse City Beach Bums have announced the addition of two pitchers to the team, DaShone Kirkendoll and Mickey Cassidy. Both players participated in the Beach Bums open tryout in Indianapolis last month.

Kirkendoll, 6'5" 240-pound lefty out of Dayton, Ohio, started his collegiate career at Temple University, where he played both baseball and basketball. He appeared in 10 games over two seasons for the Owls baseball team. For the basketball team, Kirkendoll appeared in 76 games over three seasons and averaged 2.4 points per contest. He transferred closer to home to pitch at NAIA Ohio Dominican for his senior season.

"Kirkendoll is a big, powerful right-hander that hit 87 on his first pitch off the mound," said Beach Bums' Director of Baseball Operations, Jason Wuerfel. "He showed a hard, biting slider and good feel for a change-up. He is a bit rough around the edges, but there aren't that many lefties out there with his size and velocity. If he can come into Traverse City in a little better shape and throw strikes, the sky is the limit."

Cassidy is a right-handed submarine pitcher who started pitching only after going undrafted as an infielder out of the University of Saint Francis in Indiana. He spent the summer following his senior season playing for the Bay Area Toros in the independent Continental League. In 11 relief appearances, the Toledo, Ohio native went 1-0 with one save and a 2.25 ERA.

"Cassidy made an impression from his first pitch," said Wuerfel. "There are a lot of sidearm and submarine guys out there that used to be college infielders and want to extend their careers as pitchers from a low arm slot, but not a lot of them have much velocity, a second pitch, or command of the strike zone. Cassidy was 83-84 from a low arm slot, below his belt, with nasty movement on a fastball and slider that he threw to both sides of the plate for strikes. I would say he has a solid chance to come into camp and make our opening day roster."

The Beach Bums will be holding a second tryout in Indianapolis on March 27th. The field location and time are still to be determined. The team will also hold a May 8th tryout at Wuerfel Park starting at 9:00am.
