Omaha Lancers News Release
The Chicago Steel scored five unanswered goals and snapped a five-game losing skid as they dropped the Omaha Lancers 5-2 Saturday afternoon in front of 4,671 fans at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in the first annual "Hockey Night in Omaha" presented by First National Bank. Following the loss, the Lancers fell to 29-12-3 on the year and remain at 61 standings points in the West Division.
A scoreless opening period gave way to five combined goals in the middle stanza. Omaha opened the scoring eight and a half minutes into the second period when Troy Power punched in his 16th goal of the season following a perfect 2-on-1 orchestration with Greg Wolfe. Erik Haula earned the secondary assist on Omaha's league-leading 32nd first goal of the season. The Lancers wasted little time doubling the lead as just 2:06 later Wolfe found open real estate on the right wing before wristing home his 18th marker of the year and first since being traded to Omaha. Anthony Hamburg and Matt Wahl assisted on the even strength marker netted 10:35 into the middle frame. Despite trailing by two just past the midway point of the contest, Chicago didn't quit and went on to score three unanswered goals to close the period and five straight to end the game. First, the Steel landed back-to-back power play goals just 1:12 apart when Theo DiPauli tipped in Kevin Lind's left point shot and then former Lancer Danny Mattson won a goal line scramble in sending home his 9th goal of the season. Chicago closed the period with a 3-2 advantage after Cole Gunner was stoned on a breakaway by Lancers goaltender Jeff Teglia but had the wherewithal to spin the rebound from the corner back out in front where it was rifled home by Jake Chelios. Ian Young grabbed the secondary assist on Chelios' 9th goal of the season, which proved to be the eventual game-winning marker. The assist was Young's third helper of the period.
Chicago added a pair of insurance markers in the third as Billy Latta drove home his 5th goal of the season with a one-timer from the slot and then just 1:34 later Andrei Kuchin's wraparound slipped inside the left post sealing the 5-2 victory for the Steel. The unassisted tally was Kuchin's team-leading 16th goal and 45th point this season.
Appearing in his first game in the season series, Chicago's Connor Wilson earned the victory in net turning aside 21 of Omaha's 23 total shots he faced. Meanwhile, Teglia fell to 23-10-3 on the year after just 28 saves on 33 Chicago shots.
The Lancers are back in action tomorrow evening when they welcome the Youngstown Phantoms to the Omaha Civic Auditorium for the first time this season.
