U.S. National U18 Team Edged By Russia, 2-1

MINSK, Belarus - Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) tallied an unassisted goal and Andy Iles (Ithaca, N.Y.) made 21 saves, but it was not enough as the U.S. National Under-18 Team was edged by Russia, 2-1, here tonight in its fourth game at the 2010 Under-18 Six Nations Cup. Team USA fell to 3-0-0-1 in the tournament and currently sits in second place with one game left to play.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first period, with Iles making eight saves.

Russia got on the board first at the 12:08 mark of the second stanza when Vladislav Kartaev notched a power-play goal. Iles made another eight stops in the period to keep Team USA within a goal at the end of 40 minutes.

Zucker knotted the score just 18 seconds into the final frame after putting the puck past netminder Sergey Kostenko. Daniil Apalkov regained the lead for Russia after he converted on a Nikita Gusev feed at the 6:05 mark. Much of the period proved to be a defensive struggle, with Russia outshooting the U.S. by a narrow 6-5 margin. Team USA pulled Iles in favor of an extra attacker with one minute remaining in regulation, but could not find the equalizer, allowing Russia to earn the 2-1 victory.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team will meet the Czech Republic Sunday at 2 p.m. (7 a.m. EST) in its final game at the 2010 Under-18 Six Nations Cup.

NOTES: Andy Iles was named Team USA's Player of the Game. He leads all goaltenders at the Six Nations with a 1.01 goals-against average and.960 save percentage... Jason Zucker is the leading point-getter for the U.S. with five (2-3)... Brandon Saad (Gibsonia, Pa.) paces Team USA with four goals, while Zucker and Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) are tied with a team-best three assists each... The U.S. National Under-18 Team will return to Belarus for the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation Men's World Under-18 Championship April 13-23 in Minsk and Bobruisk.
