Elliott, Alvarez And Sanchez Called Up For National Team Duty

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- San Jose Earthquakes players Simon Elliott, Arturo Alvarez and Ramon Sanchez have been called for national team duty. Elliott will play for New Zealand as they prepare for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with a match against Mexico on March 3 at The Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif. at 8 p.m. PT. Alvarez and Sanchez will play for El Salvador in a World Cup tune-up against the United States at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 4 p.m. PT. That match can be seen live on ESPN Classic and Telefutura.

Elliott has made 69 appearances for the All Whites, and has scored eight international goals. His last call-up to his national side was for the World Cup Qualifier Playoff against Bahrain on Nov. 14 when New Zealand punched its ticket to South Africa. He also appeared in three matches during the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa last June.

Alvarez made his only five appearances for El Salvador in World Cup Qualifying matches, the last being on Oct. 14 against World Cup-bound Honduras. Sanchez, who is the captain for El Salvador, also last played for his country on Oct. 14 and has appeared in over 55 matches for El Salvador, scoring two goals during that span. He played in every World Cup qualifier for El Salvador for the 2010 World Cup.
