Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
Traverse City MI-- The Traverse City Beach Bums have signed outfielder Paul Cruz to the 2010 roster.
Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 40th round of the 2008 draft, Cruz comes to Traverse City with two years of professional baseball experience. In 2008, he played in 44 games for the Cardinals' Appalachian League affiliate, Johnson City. He hit one homerun and had nine RBI. Last season, the 5'11'', 195-pound outfielder was a member of the Quad Cities River Bandits in the Midwest League. He hit three homeruns and drove in 20 runs while posting a.260 batting average in 54 games. Cruz made at least 12 starts at each outfield position.
"Cruz is an experienced player with above average defensive ability at all three outfield positions," said Beach Bums' Director of Baseball Operations, Jason Wuerfel. "Offensively, he is a top of the order hitter who can draw a walk, won't strike out, and if the pitcher makes a mistake, he has the ability to pop a ball out of the park."
Before starting his professional career, Cruz played his final two collegiate baseball seasons at The University of Tampa. In 2007, he helped lead the Spartans to the Division II National Championship.
The Traverse City Beach Bums are entering their fifth season of play in 2010, with the home opener scheduled for Friday, May 28th versus the Oakland County Cruisers. The Beach Bums will play 54 of their 96 games at home in 2010. Season tickets are now on sale -- please phone 231-943-0100.
