Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release
The Ice Flyers failed to hold a 1-0 lead in the third period, falling to Columbus 2-1 on Friday night.
Pensacola had possession of the puck for the majority of the first period, but Rycroft made all 11 saves necessary to preserve the scoreless game. Pensacola had two powerplays in the first frame but came up empty. Ryan Scott and the Ice Flyers? defense were sharp, killing the one Columbus advantage and stopping all six of their shots.
The second period started and Pensacola quickly found itself on a power play. Jeff Zatorski and Matt Whitehead were pressuring the crease from the right side when a deflection came to Mark Hinz to feet away from the goal on the left side. Hinz lifted the puck into the open left side of the net, and the Ice Flyers had a 1-0 lead that would carry into the second intermission.
The game changed in the third period. During the final second of a four on four, Lundale took the puck off a faceoff and wristed it hard from the right point past the Ice Flyers? goalie at 8:46. With the game tied at one apiece, Sam Bowles fired a shot from the high slot that gave the Cottonmouths a 2-1 advantage. Lundale and Green assisted on the play at 10:10. The goal would go on to be the game-winner, as the Ice Flyers were hit for two penalties in the final ten minutes that hindered any thoughts of a comeback.
The Ice Flyers return to the Civic Center ice tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. to take on the FireAntz. The game is also Crazy Character Night, and Ice Flyers? mascot Maverick will be joined by Scooby-Doo and over 15 of his mascot friends to entertain children and fans of all ages. Also, fans can bring their Mediacom bill to the box office and purchase up to five discounted tickets.
