
Rays Farmhand, Southwest Minnesota State Pitcher Ryan Morse Signs With Saints

ST. PAUL, MN (January 28, 2010) - The St. Paul Saints have had lots of luck with pitchers from Minnesota and on Thursday they signed another one, left-hander Ryan Morse, who spent his five year professional career with the Tampa Bay Rays and is a product of Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall.
The 26-year-old Morse spent the majority of the 2009 season at Double-A Montgomery where he went 4-6 with a 4.84 ERA in 20 games (14 starts). In 74.1 innings pitched he walked 38 and struck out 40 while opponents hit.280 against him. He also pitched three games (two starts) at Single-A Charlotte going 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA.
Morse was selected in the 13th round of the June Amateur Draft and is the only Major league draft pick to come out of SMSU. In 2006 he was named Pitcher of the Year at Rookie level Princeton. He was selected to the Florida State League All-Star Game in 2008 when he played for Vero Beach.
In his three seasons at SMSU (2003-05) Morse earned First Team All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate honors all three years. He ranks second in school history in strikeouts (190), third in strikeouts/per nine innings (9.02), tied for sixth in wins (17), seventh in games started (34), and eighth in innings pitched (189.2). He also pitched the sixth no-hitter in school history Morse was born and raised in St. Cloud.
The Saints currently have five players under contract, three pitchers and two position players.
