Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
GATINEAU, QC --- The league-leading Saint John Sea Dogs picked up their 40th win of the season in dominant fashion on Sunday afternoon, routing the Gatineau Olympiques by a score of 8-0 the Robert Guertin Arena. Saint John was stellar at both ends of the ice all day long, with every player contributing in what proved to be one of the most lopsided road victories in team history.
The Sea Dogs held the Olympiques to only 15 shots on goal in the match, all of which were stopped by Anaheim Ducks prospect Marco Cousineau. Gatineau failed to register a single SOG during the second period, marking the first time in franchise history that Saint John has held an opponent shot-less for an entire stanza.
Tomas Jurco (2), Danick Gauthier (2), Nick Petersen, Stephen MacAulay, Michael Kirkpatrick, and Mike Hoffman all scored for the Sea Dogs on Sunday, with Hoffman taking over sole possession of the QMJHL goal scoring lead by netting the 32nd marker of his overage campaign.
Sophomore forward Danick Gauthier scored the first goal of the day 14:56 into the match, finishing off an impressive odd-man rush with Mike Thomas and Kevin Gagné by wiring home his 11th goal of the year on a high wrist shot. Superstar sniper Mike Hoffman doubled the Sea Dogs' lead just 39 seconds later, beating Maxime Clermont through the five-hole on a nifty backhand shot after taking a cross-ice feed from Stanislav Galiev as the talented twosome charged into Olympiques territory.
Import winger Tomas Jurco gave Saint John a 3-0 lead at the 1:01 mark of the second period, chipping the puck past a sprawling Clermont from the side of the hosts' net to improve his 2009-10 goals total to 16. Jurco struck again 4:36 later, exhibiting incredible hand-eye coordination in redirecting a waste-high Yann Sauvé point shot to the back of Gatineau's net.
Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Nick Petersen then got in on the action, netting a power play goal midway through the middle frame. Another man-up marker, this one off the stick of Danick Gauthier, put Saint John up 6-0 as the visitors' offensive onslaught continued unabated.
Rookie net minder Dereck Tait took over goaltending duties for Gatineau to start the third period, an act which failed to alter the home team's fortunes as Michael Kirkpatrick beat the Antigonish, NS native on a wrist shot from the slot 5:26 into regulation's final frame. Second-year centre Stephen MacAulay finished up the scoring by netting his seventh goal of the season late in the third, making the final score Saint John 8 - Gatineau.
Up next for the Port City's major junior squad is a Friday night tilt with the Val-d'Or Foreurs at Harbour Station. Tickets to this 7:30pm contest are available by calling the arena box office at (506) 657-1234 or by visiting www.tickets.harbourstation.ca.
