Sporting Kansas City News Release
The Kansas City Wizards will begin their journey through the 2010 MLS season on Tuesday, as players and technical staff will report to the team's Swope Park Training Center for the first day of preseason training. Training will commence at 11a.m. CT on Tuesday, and will continue through the week at the same start time. Players and staff will be available to the media immediately following each training session.
"The entire technical staff is very excited to have the players back for the start of preseason training," Wizards Manager Peter Vermes said. "We have a long process ahead of us, and we can't wait to get started."
The Kansas City team that arrives at Swope Park on Tuesday will be quite different than the one that left it at the end of last season. The Wizards added five players in the MLS SuperDraft last week, including Teal Bunbury, winner of the 2009 MAC Hermann Trophy, awarded annually to the nation's best collegiate soccer player. The team also added two international players in Colombian defender Pablo Andrés Escobar and Guadeloupian midfielder Stéphane Auvray.
The off-season has been a successful one off the field as well for the Wizards organization. The team broke ground on a new soccer-specific stadium in Kansas City, Kansas on Wednesday, with team President Robb Heineman personally manning the bulldozer that shoveled the first load of dirt. The stadium is expected to seat 18,000 people, and is targeted for completion in 2011.
The Kansas City Wizards are now accepting renewals from current season ticket holders and new season ticket deposits for the 2010 Major League Soccer season. The Wizards will begin the 2010 campaign with a home match on Saturday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. CT against D.C. United at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. Kansas City, a charter member of Major League Soccer, will play its 15th season in 2010.
Fans who renew their season tickets or purchase new season-ticket packages will retain an early priority number that will determine seat locations in Kansas City's new stadium, which was approved Jan. 19, 2010. To renew season tickets or place a deposit for new season tickets, call the Wizards locally at 888-4KC-GOAL or 913-387-3400 or visit www.kcwizards.com.
Kansas City is one of 18 cities included in the USA Bid Committee's bid to FIFA. The USA Bid Committee will submit their bid to FIFA in May, with FIFA choosing the host nations for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in December of 2010. To support the effort, Kansas Citians are asked to sign the petition at www.goUSAbid.com/kc and pass the petition along to their friends and family.
