UNCASVILLE, Conn. (January 13, 2009) - Portland High School has been selected as the Connecticut Sun High School Girls' Basketball Team of the Week, presented by Camaro Signs of Yantic, for the week of January 4-10th.
On Tuesday, January 5th, Portland improved to 8-0 with an impressive win on the road against defending CIAC Class S champion Old Lyme, pulling out a 40-37 victory over the traditional Shoreline Conference powerhouse. The Highlanders added a victory over Westbrook three days later.
This is the fourth season the Connecticut Sun has recognized a Team of the Week. Each winner will receive a commemorative plaque and a congratulatory letter from Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault.
The Team of the Week is part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the Connecticut Sun to highlight local high school girls' basketball, where future WNBA stars are already competing. The Sun have also hosted the CIAC Championship luncheon and the four state title games, and the team will recognize the four champions during a ceremony at halftime of a regular season game during the 2010 season.
