Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

HALIFAX, NS--- The Saint John Sea Dogs wrapped up their opening half schedule with a highly-impressive road effort Friday night, skating into the Metro Centre and capturing a 6-1 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads.

Saint John enters the QMJHL's mid-season break with a league-best record of 31-6-1-0.

Mike Hoffman (2), Tomas Jurco, Mike Thomas, Stephen MacAulay, Nathan Beaulieu, and Nick Petersen all scored for the Sea Dogs on Friday, while Karel St-Laurent stopped 27 of the 28 shots fired upon him in improving to 11-2 on the year.

At the other end of the ice, Mathieu Corbeil fell to 8-20 after surrendering six goals in forty minutes of action. The lone goal of the night for Halifax, meanwhile, came courtesy of Linden Bahm

Mike Thomas gave his team an early 1-0 lead on Friday, snapping a loose puck through Corbeil's pads in the seventh minute of play. Stephen MacAulay doubled the visitors' advantage a moment later, burying his own rebound from point-blank range to record the fourth goal of his sophomore season.

The Mooseheads got on the scoreboard at the 11:36 mark of the first period, with Linden Bahm ripping a wrist shot past St-Laurent's glove on the fly to reduce his team's deficit to one. On the ensuing faceoff Mike Thomas and Sawyer Hannay squared off at centre ice in a marathon of a scrap, with Saint John's Captain taking the lengthy bout in a decision after administering several solid blows upon the Mooseheads blue-liner.

Thomas' scrap added the final component to a single-stanza ‘Gordie Howe Hat Trick', as the rugged winger had already scored and registered an assist prior to dropping the gloves with Hannay.

Nick Petersen restored the Sea Dogs' two-goal lead 3:33 into the second period, blasting a slap shot past Corbeil's blocker from the low slot to tally his 22nd marker of 2009-10 . St-Laurent came up with his biggest save of the night on the ensuing shift, denying Charles Bety on a breakaway to keep his team's 3-1 lead intact.

Ottawa Senators prospect Mike Hoffman then scored back-to-back goals to put the Sea Dogs up by four. At the 6:25 mark of the middle frame, the 20-year old forward knocked in a rebound produced by a Zack Phillips shot to pick up his 22nd of the year, with his 23rd coming 1:36 later on a blistering one-timer set up nicely by Stanislav Galiev from behind the Mooseheads' net.

An absolute howitzer off the stick of Nathan Beaulieu gave Saint John a 6-1 lead late in the second, which was how the score remained as Friday's intradivisional showdown reached the forty minute mark.

Neither team managed to find the back of the net throughout the opening 19+ minutes of an overtly-physical third period, with rookie winger Tomas Jurco scoring with thirty seconds remaining in regulation to give the Port City's major junior squad the decision by a 7-1 final.

The Sea Dogs kick off their second-half schedule on Sunday, December 27 on the road versus the Acadie-Bathurst Titan (puck drop: 4pm). Saint John's next home game is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, December 29 at 7pm versus the P.E.I. Rocket. Tickets to this Atlantic Division showdown can be obtained by calling the Harbour Station Box Office at (506) 657-1234.
