(York, Pa): The York Revolution and Manager Andy Etchebarren have announced the hiring of Mark Mason as the team's new pitching coach, replacing former Baltimore Orioles reliever Tippy Martinez. Martinez had held the post for the Revolution's first three seasons of play. Mason brings a decorated resume to the Atlantic League, with 22 seasons of coaching experience at the collegiate and professional level.Mason comes to York from western Pennsylvania, where he was most recently the manager of the Washington Wild Things of the independent Frontier League. Mason's accomplishments in the Frontier League are numerous, having worked with three separate organizations in that circuit. His first stint in Washington began in 2002 as pitching coach, where he remained for three seasons. In 2005, he became manager of the Ohio Valley Red Coats, and was named Frontier League Manager of the Year in his lone season as skipper of the travel team.
In 2006, Mason returned to the Washington Wild Things as pitching coach, before taking the managerial reins of the Chillicothe Paints, also of the Frontier League. He managed the Paints for the 2007 and 2008 seasons before the franchise relocated. Last season, Mason joined the Wild Things for a third time, this time as manager and led the club to a 43-53 overall record.
"Mark's well established background in the professional game, and a league very much like ours made him the most attractive candidate as our new pitching coach," said Revolution Manager Andy Etchebarren. "We're very confident he'll build a great Atlantic League pitching staff, as he did in the Frontier League."
Whether as a manager or pitching coach in the Frontier League, Mason's reputation for building top-notch pitching staffs grew consistently during his tenure. His pitching staffs led the Frontier League in wins in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006.
Before joining the pro game, Mason spent 16 seasons from 1987 through 2002 as the head baseball coach at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, PA.
