
Bears Rally For 13-12 Win In Game Three

Newark, NJ- The Newark Bears rallied from an 11-2 deficit to defeat the Somerset Patriots 13-12 in Game Three of the Freedom Division Championship Series.
Newark rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 13-12. The Bears loaded the bases on a walk by first baseman Rob Mackowiak, a single to left by third baseman Willis Otanez and a one out walk by rightfielder Kenard Jones. Shortstop Victor Mercedes then hit an RBI single to right, and after a strikeout, leftfielder Charlton Jimerson won it with a bases clearing two out, three run double to right center.
The Patriots struck first with four runs in the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. Centerfielder Sean Smith drew a lead off walk, and after a walk by shortstop Anthony Granato, rightfielder Noah Hall reached on a fielder's choice ground ball to shortstop. Second baseman Matt Hagen then crushed a two out three run home run (1) to left. First baseman Travis Anderson followed with a double off the right center field wall and then catcher Jason Belcher ripped an RBI single down the right field line.
The Bears got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to cut the Patriots' lead to 4-2 when centerfielder Donzell McDonald reached on a Patriots' throwing error on a ground ball to second and Jimerson followed with a two run home run to left (1).
Somerset answered with three runs in the top of the second inning to make it 7-2. The Patriots loaded the bases on a lead off walk to leftfielder Elliott Ayala, a bunt single down the third base line by Smith and a walk by Granato. Ayala would score on a balk, Smith on a one out sacrifice fly to right by third baseman Jeff Nettles and then Granato scampered home on a wild pitch.
The Patriots added two more runs in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 9-2 when Anderson drew a lead off walk and Ayala smacked a two out two run home run (1) to left.
Somerset plated two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a commanding 11-2 lead. The Patriots loaded the bases on a one out single to center by Hall, a double to left center by Nettles and an intentional walk to Hagen. Belcher then drove in Hall and Nettles when he ripped a two out two run single to right.
Newark scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 11-4 Patriots. Jimerson led off with a single to left, stole second and scored on a one out RBI single to right by designated hitter Carl Everett. After a ground out, Everett came home on a two out RBI single to left by Otanez.
The Bears added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 11-6 when second baseman D'Angelo Jimenez hit a one out two run single to right. Newark loaded the bases on a lead off double to left center by Jones, a one out walk by McDonald and an infield single by Jimerson.
The Patriots added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 12-6 when Granato drew a lead off walk and scored on two out two run double to left by Hagen.
Newark cut the Patriots lead to 12-9 with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Bears loaded the bases on infield singles by Jones and Mercedes and a walk by McDonald. Jimerson then hit a two run single to center and McDonald would score on a double play ground ball to second.
Bears' closer Tracy Thorpe (1-0) picked up the win, throwing 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out two. Patriots' closer Bret Prinz (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one in 0.2 innings pitched.
The Freedom Division Series will continue with Game Four at Newark at 1:05 pm on Sunday afternoon.
