
Patriots Take 2-0 Series Lead With Shutout Of Bears

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 5-0 in Game Two of the Freedom Division Championship Series in front of an Atlantic League playoff record crowd of 7,647 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Friday evening.
The Patriots took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Second baseman Matt Hagen singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. Hagen came around to score on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Teuris Olivares.
Somerset added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Hagen doubled, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead.
The Patriots broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Center fielder Sean Smith walked, right fielder Noah Hall walked, and third baseman Jeff Nettles walked to load the bases. Hagen followed with a three-run double that gave the Patriots a 5-0 advantage.
Patriots starter Joel Kirsten (1-0) picked up the win, allowing just two hits and striking out seven in seven scoreless innings pitched. Newark starter Isaac Hess (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing two runs, one earned, on two hits and six strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched.
Patriots relievers Travis Minix and Bret Prinz each threw a scoreless inning to finish the game.
The Patriots take on the Newark Bears in Game Three of The Freedom Division Championship Series on Saturday, September 26th at Newark at 7:05 pm. Should the Patriots advance to the Championship Series, the Patriots will return home for Games 1 and 2 on October 1st and 2nd at 7:05 pm.
