Drive Stay Alive, BlueClaws Still Lead Series 2-1

GREENVILLE, SC - The Lakewood BlueClaws championship in 2009 is going to have to wait another day at least as they could not get the big hit, which they had been doing throughout the playoffs in a 3-2 loss on Thursday night to the Greenville Drive. The BlueClaws scored first but allowed all three runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Through the first four inning the game was a stalemate and a pitchers' duel between both BlueClaws starter Trevor May and Drive starter Stolmy Pimentel. Each had worked through the top of the fifth without allowing a run and having to do so working out of a number of situations with runners on base.

However, the BlueClaws got their breakthrough in the top of the fifth inning as Travis d'Arnaud hit a double with one out and the very next hitter, Jim Murphy also sent a high fly ball into the gap in right-centerfield, scoring d'Arnaud and giving the BlueClaws a 1-0 lead.

May worked through five innings and did not allow a run. He worked out of having runners in scoring position in three innings. His five scoreless innings extends his scoreless innings streak to 21 innings. May struck out three and walked two, he also allowed three hits.

Jacob Diekman (0-1) came on in the sixth and quickly allowed a run. After walking the leadoff batter Zach Gentile, he got a pop out before another walk and an RBI-double by Mitch Dening. Luke Wertz was the third pitcher in the ballgame for the BlueClaws and entered with runners on second and third with one out. Wertz allowed a single and a run to score and then a sacrifice fly before getting out of the inning with the score 3-1 in favor of the Greenville Drive.

Pimentel finished his day pitching five and allowing six hits and just one run. Jeremy Kehrt came on and worked two outs into the ninth. He worked out of first and second with no out with a double play ball off the bat of d'Arnaud in the seventh he allowed one run on a double by Travis Mattair in the eighth. Mattair hit the double with one out and two strikes on him after Sebastian Valle hit the top of the Green Monster in left.

Eryk McConnell entered in the eight inning in a 3-2 ballgame and kept it that way, setting up the situation in the ninth.

Kehrt (1-0), in the ninth, got Anthony Gose swinging before a single to Harold Garcia and a fielder's choice by d'Arnaud. Murphy singled and that brought up Valle with two runners on and two outs. The Drive brought in Kyle Rutter to finish the ballgame. He did so inducing a fly ball to right field.

Lakewood had a number of chances in the ballgame as they had 11 hits and hit only 2-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Gose and Murphy both had two hits apiece for the BlueClaws.

The series will continue on Friday at 7:05 pm as the Drive avoid elimination with their victory. The starters for game four will be Korey Noles (1-0) for the BlueClaws and Fabian Williamson (10-5) for the Drive.
