Spinners' outfielder earns award after week with .450 average, seven stolen bases
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners, Class-A Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, announced today that Spinners outfielder Wilfred Pichardo has been named New York-Penn League Player of the Week for the week beginning Monday, August 17.
The 19-year-old Pichardo was 9-for-20 (.450) with three doubles, eight runs scored and seven RBI from atop the Spinners lineup. Additionally, Pichardo was a perfect 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts, giving him 23 on the season, tied for second in the New York-Penn League, behind teammate Derrik Gibson (26).
Pichardo is in his third season in the Red Sox organization, second season stateside, after splitting last season with the GCL Red Sox and Spinners. He led the Gulf Coast League with 42 stolen bases, the most in the league since 1991, before earning a promotion to Lowell where he played three games before suffering a leg injury that ended his season.
After struggling to start the 2009 season, batting just .200 on July 2, Pichardo has hit .305 for the month of July and .325 in August, raising his average to a team leading and season high mark of .303 coming into the week.
For the season Pichardo is batting .296 with two home runs and 17 RBI. He has 23 stolen bases and has scored 33 runs on the season while playing all three outfield positions.
The last Spinner to be selected as Player of the Week was outfielder Luis Sumoza, who was selected for the week of Aug. 11-18 in 2008.
Pichardo and the Spinners return to LeLacheur Park for the final homestand of the regular season Thursday, August 27 for six games. The Spinners currently hold a 2.5 game lead atop the Stedler Division standings as they attempt to defend their division title and return to the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
