Bears Defeat Patriots

August 16, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL) Somerset Patriots

Bridgewater, NJ - The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 6-4 in front of 6,297 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Sunday evening.

The Bears took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Center fielder Tike Redman walked, right fielder Charlton Jimerson (15) hit a two run homerun to centerfield, second baseman D'Angelo Jimenez followed with a double, and came around to score on a double by designated hitter Carl Everett to make the score 3-0.

Somerset scored in the bottom of the fifth inning after second baseman Matt Hagen walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI triple by catcher Jason Belcher. Belcher eventually came around to score on an RBI groundout by right fielder Joe Burke to cut the lead to 3-2.

Newark added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning after left fielder Carl Loadenthal walked, catcher Brian Shubsda singled, and Loadenthal scored on a bases loaded walk by Jimerson for the 4-2 advantage.

The Bears scored in the top of the eighth inning after Loadenthal was hit by a pitch, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Tedman to make the score 5-2.

The Patriots scored in the bottom of the eighth inning after left fielder Elliott Ayala singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a base hit by center fielder Sean Smith. Smith then stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-4.

The Bears added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning after designated hitter Michael Hernandez doubled and scored on an RBI single by first baseman Sandy Madera for the 6-4 advantage.

Bears starter Kyle Kobernus (3-3) got the win after allowing two earned runs on one hit in five innings pitched. Patriots starter Jared Gothreaux (6-7) suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs on six hits in five innings pitched. Bears closer Armando Benitez (15) got the save after tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, August 24th when the Patriots return home for a 7:05 pm game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The game includes Star Wars Night with over ten characters in attendance.
