Great Lakes Loons News Release

MIDLAND, MI - After surrendering four runs in the top of the second inning, the Great Lakes Loons plated five runs of their own to rally for a 6-4 win over the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Thursday night at Dow Diamond.

Both teams batted around during their turn at bat in the second. Blake Tekotte had the big blow for the TinCaps, a three-run home run, to give his team a 4-0 lead. Loons starter JonMichael Redding followed the Tekotte homer with a pair of walks, but got Jaff Decker to ground out to second to end the inning.

His offense got all those runs back, plus one, in the bottom of the frame. With one out, Alfredo Silverio singled and scored on a double by Matt Wallach to get the Loons on the board. After a groundout, the Loons scored four runs with two outs. Parker Dalton walked and both he and Wallach scored on a bloop double by Dee Gordon. Nick Buss then walked to extend the inning and Anthony Hatch followed with a double to score Gordon and Buss and give the Loons a 5-4 lead.

Only one more run scored in the game, as the Loons manufactured a run in the fourth to complete the scoring. Jerry Sands doubled to lead off the inning, was sacrificed to third by Parker Dalton, and scored on a safety squeeze laid down by Dee Gordon.

Steve Smith (3-1) picked up the win in relief of Redding, who lasted only three innings and was responsible for all four Fort Wayne runs. Smith walked five and gave up two hits in his three innings, but did not allow a run. Luis Garcia pitched two innings and allowed only one hit, with Cole St. Clair working the ninth to pick up his 10th save of the year.

Simon Castro took the loss for the TinCaps, allowing all six runs on seven hits in five innings. Two TinCaps relievers - Colin Lynch (two innings) and Allen Harrington (one inning) - pitched three hitless frames out of the bullpen.

The two teams wrap up their four-game series tomorrow night at Dow Diamond with a 7:05 p.m. game followed by a post-game fireworks Loontacular powered by Dow Corning. Right-hander Josh Walter (8-4, 3.23) starts for the Loons opposite TinCaps' righty Dexter Carter (1-1, 5.40). Pre-game coverage begins with the Loons On-Deck Circle, also powered by Dow Corning, at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN 100.9 FM.
