Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs looked to avoid the sweep to the Camden Riversharks Sunday afternoon at Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, Md. After losing the first two games of the three-game series, the Blue Crabs once again found themselves trailing early.
The Riversharks jumped out to a two-run lead in the top of the first with a two-run home run by Jon Knott. After the Blue Crabs' Jeremy Owens scored on a RBI double by Richard Giannotti in the second, Camden added a run in the third and two more in the fourth. Knott and Brett Bonvechio scored on an RBI single and sacrifice fly, respectively, to expand the lead to four runs.
In the bottom of the fourth, Lance Burkhart brought the Crabs to within one run on a first-pitch, three-run home run that just cleared the big wall in left field. Michael Tucker and Owens also scored on the home run. Tucker reached base with a single and Owens walked before Burkhart brought them home. After the Burkhart home run, both teams struggled to reach base with the bat. Both teams were held hitless until a single in the bottom of the eighth. The Blue Crabs put two runners on base in the eighth but failed to score. In the ninth, Camden added an insurance run when Brian Burgamy scored from second on a John Purdom single. However, it was not needed as the Blue Crabs failed to produce any runs in the ninth.
Camden (11-18, 44-55) earned the sweep of Southern Maryland (16-13, 58-41) with the win. Camden starter Kevin Mannix (2-0) earned the win, going seven innings while allowing four runs on four hits. Blue Crabs starter Joe Gannon (7-13) picked up the loss with six innings of work, allowing five runs. Chris Shaver picked up his fourth save of the season.
After an off day Monday, the Blue Crabs will look to bounce back into the win column Tuesday night against Long Island. The Crabs are 4-3 at home this season against the Ducks and hold a 10-7 record overall against Long Island in 2009. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium.
