MISSOULA, MT - David Nick saw two straight breaking balls from Robert Currie get called strikes with two out and the game-winning run on third base in the bottom of the ninth inning. On the third straight curve he saw, Nick knew just where to hit it.
Nick singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Errol Hollinger with the game-winning run, as the Missoula Osprey rallied for a 5-4 win over the Helena Brewers on Tuesday, in front of 2,038 fans at Ogren Park Allegiance Field.
The Osprey (2-0, 23-17) overcame a 4-2, seventh-inning deficit to take their third win in the last four games at home against the Brewers, and moved to 5-2 at home against Helena. The Osprey are also a Pioneer League-best 16-5 at home this season.
Errol Hollinger, who homered and singled, led off the ninth by hitting a ground ball to third, and reaching first when Kyle Dhanani's throw was high to first base. Hollinger moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Henry Zabala and to third on a groundout by Raywily Gomez to set up Nick's heroics.
Nick went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks to join Hollinger with two hits each, as the Osprey could only muster eight safeties off of five Helena pitchers. Michael Noboa and Zabala added RBI singles, while Ramon Castillo and David Narodowski added singles for Missoula.
Charles Brewer (5-0) picked up the win, and extended his professional win streak to five games. Brewer pitched the final two innings, and while he did allow three walks, he did not give up a base hit and struck out two batters. Brewer is second in the Pioneer League in wins. Eric Smith, Keith Cantwell and Anthony Smith combined to allow just three earned runs on five hits and three walks, with five strikeouts.
The Osprey and Brewers conclude their three-game series on Wednesday at Ogren Park Allegiance Field. The Osprey will have right-hander Enrique Burgos get the call, while the Brewers will go with the league leader in wins, right-hander Nick Bucci.
Tickets for any remaining Osprey home game this season can be obtained by calling the Osprey at (406) 543-3300, stopping by the Osprey Team Store at 412 W. Alder, or ordering online at www.missoulaosprey.com.
