Sporting Kansas City News Release
The Kansas City Wizards (5-7-6, 21 pts) lost to FC Dallas (5-9-5, 20 pts) Saturday night 6-0 at Pizza Hut Park. FC Dallas scored four second-half goals, as striker Jeff Cunningham tallied four times and attacking midfielder David Ferreira added two more. Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman became just the second player in MLS history to start 100 straight games and ran his League-record consecutive minutes-played streak to 9,000 straight minutes.
FC Dallas took the lead in the 39th minute when David Ferreira played right-winger Atiba Harris through up the flank with a splitting pass. Harris ran onto the well-weighted ball and slid a pass along the ground to forward Jeff Cunningham making a run at the back post. Cunningham tapped the ball home from close range for a 1-0 lead. Then in the 42nd minute, Ferreira converted a goal of his own after Brek Shea and Dave van den Bergh worked a give-and-go on the left wing. Shea sent a low cross to Ferreira making a long run out of midfield for a conversion from close range and a 2-0 FC Dallas lead.
The Wizards nearly opened the scoring in the second half when striker Adam Cristman fed a pass from the left wing to midfielder Davy Arnaud in the center of the park. Arnaud took a touch then launched a right-footed bomb that FCD goalkeeper Dario Sala did well to save. Cristman made his first start for the Wizards on the night, playing 77 minutes. Cristman sat out the first 16 games of the season with a broken toe suffered during preseason. Arnaud made his first appearance since June 28 after spending the month of July with the U.S. National Team during the run to a silver medal in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Dallas then added four more strikes in the second half, with Cunningham scoring three and Ferreira adding a second tally. Cunningham made it 3-0 in the 66th minute from the penalty spot after drawing a foul in the area, then converted a long-range cross from Brek Shea in the 75th minute. Ferreira collected a loose ball near the top of the area and scored in the 78th minute before Cunningham slid one home from the top of the penalty area to round out the scoring in the 89th minute.
Kansas City returns to action Sunday, Aug. 16 as Cuauhtémoc Blanco and the Chicago Fire come to town for a 2 p.m. CT match at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The Wizards rallied to tie Chicago 2-2 in their first meeting of the season, with striker Josh Wolff scoring two late goals to salvage a road point at TOYOTA Park. The match will serve as Kansas City's Public Safety Night, as the Wizards will honor police officers, firefighters and EMTs. For tickets, visit www.Ticketmaster.com/kcwizards.
