FORT MYERS -- David Bromberg was terrific, working out of several jams, and catcher Jair Fernandez provided the only offense in a 1-0 shutout of the Brevard County Manatees at Hammond Stadium on Monday night.

Bromberg (9-1) sat down ten straight at one point but his most impressive work came in the fifth inning. A double and two infield bunt singles loaded the bases for the Manatees with no one out in a scoreless game. Bromberg proceeded to strike out Eric Farris, induce a popout to short from Lee Haydel, and strike out Steffan Wilson with a slider in the dirt to leave the bases loaded with no runs allowed.

In the bottom of the inning, Fernandez hit a line drive home run to left field, his third of the season, off Amaury Rivas (8-6).

The Manatees threatened to tie it up in the sixth with a double to left but a perfect relay from left fielder Evan Bigley to shortstop Estarlin de los Santos to Fernandez resulted in a lead-preserving out at home plate against runner Chris Errecart.

It was quite a pitchers' duel between Bromberg and Rivas. Both were dazzling under the lights as the Miracle ace scattered eight hits over six and two-thirds innings. He walked just one and struck out eight. In two starts against the Manatees this season, Bromberg has struck out 20 in 12 and two-thirds innings.

Rivas, meanwhile, limited Fort Myers to six hits in six and one-third as he walked one and struck out seven. The solo homer to Fernandez was the only blemish. Jim Henderson worked one and two-thirds in relief with no hits and two strikeouts.

Joe Testa got his first save of the season with two and one-third innings of work in relief of Bromberg, giving up one hit and fanning three.

Left-hander Tyler Robertson will take the hill for the Miracle in Tuesday night's third game of the series.
