Nelson Named Player of the Week
July 27, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
WOODBRIDGE, Va.- Already the team with the reigning Carolina League Player of the Week in Chris Marrero, the Potomac Nationals announced today that utilityman Dan Nelson has taken home the honor for the week of July 20-26. It is the first time that Nelson has won the award in 2009.
The P-Nats' jack-of-all-trades, Nelson has played double-digit games at second base, third base, and the outfield for the Nationals in 2009. The switch-hitter has excelled wherever Trent Jewett has penciled his name into the lineup, carrying a .283 batting average, good for 11th in the Carolina League, with five home runs and 34 runs batted in for the Nationals.
Over the past week, Nelson hit .391 (9-23) with a league-leading eight RBI. He also led the league in slugging percentage (.739), extra-base hits (6), and triples (2). He capped off the week in style, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI in Potomac's 6-4 victory over Salem on Sunday.
An on-base machine, Nelson has nearly as many walks (44) as strikeouts (48) this season, and is fourth in the Carolina League in on-base percentage with a .393 mark.
Nelson has turned it on since the All-Star break, batting .354 with two home runs and 22 RBI, ten more than he tallied in the entire first half of the season. He has racked up an on-base percentage of .438 with an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of .990, a very impressive mark for a player not necessarily seen as a power threat with sluggers like Chris Marrero and Michael Burgess hitting behind him.
Nelson and the P-Nats just finished a 4-2 road trip through Lynchburg and Salem and now head home to take on the Myrtle Beach Pelicans starting Monday night with first pitch at 7:05 ET.
The homestand kicks off with the return of Dollar Monday to Pfitzner Stadium presented by the Washington Post. All fans can buy both grandstand tickets and hot dogs for the low, low price of just one dollar! For just four quarters, ten dimes, twenty nickels, and one hundred pennies, you can enjoy the thrifty life with the P-Nats! And of course, dollar bills are still accepted and appreciated, so come on down to the ballpark.
