Salt Lake Collects 28 Hits While Holding Beavers to Just 12

SALT LAKE CITY - The Salt Lake Bees used a 10-run first inning to pull away in the first game of a doubleheader and Mike MacDonald allowed one run in six innings as the Bees defeated the Portland Beavers 4-1 in the nightcap Sunday at Spring Mobile Ballpark.

Ryan Budde hit a grand slam, Bobby Wilson added three RBIs and Matt Brown gathered a pair of run-scoring singles to lead the Bees (52-50) to a 13-6 victory in the opener.

Brad Knox (6-5) pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out seven to earn the win in game one.

Brian Lawrence (4-3) took the loss after giving up 12 runs on 14 hits, including 10 runs in the first frame, in three innings of work.

Craig Stansberry hit a solo shot in the first to put the Beavers (45-57) on the scoreboard, 1-0.

The Bees brought 14 batters to the plate in a 10-run first inning. Salt Lake began the offensive outburst with four RBI singles before Budde knocked in a grand slam. The early scoring was capped off with a two-out, two-run single by Wilson, his third RBI of the inning.

Stansberry belted his second homer of the game, a three-run blast in the third inning, to cut the Beavers' deficit to six, 10-4.

Seth Johnston hit a lead-off ground-rule double and scored on a ground-out in the fourth, but the Bees put the game out of reach with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Budde collected his fifth RBI of the game with a run-scoring double in the six.

Portland scored another run in the seventh on an RBI groundout by Danny Putnam.

In the second game, MacDonald (6-10) surrendered one run on five hits while striking out three in six innings to get the win.

Jeremy Hill (19) struck out one in a perfect seventh inning to take the save.

Matt Teague (0-1) earned the loss in his Triple-A debut after yielding four runs on eight hits over four innings.

The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a run-scoring double by Putnam.

Gary Patchett followed two consecutive base hits with an RBI single and Brown scored on a sacrifice bunt as the Bees took a 2-1 lead in the second.

Salt Lake tacked on two runs in the third frame on a lead-off homer by Terry Evans and an RBI single by Wilson.

The Beavers finish out their eight-game road trip on Monday against the Salt Lake Bees. First pitch is 6:05 p.m. (Pacific)

NOTES: The doubleheader was scheduled after the game on July 24 was postponed due to illness ... Putnam extended his hitting streak to six games ... Chadd Hartman played DH in his Beavers debut, going 0-for-3 in the first game and 1-for-3 in game two ... Hartman hit a single in the sixth inning for his first career Triple-A hit ... catcher Griffin Benedict also appeared in his first game as a Beaver, finishing the second game 0-for-3 ... Stansberry collected his first four-RBI game of the season in the opening contest ... Teague became the Beavers' 19th starting pitcher this season, matching the franchise record set in 2005 ... four Beavers made their Triple-A debuts Sunday, including Mike DeMark, who allowed no runs on three hits in two innings of work in the second game.
