Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA (July 21, 2009) - In a result eerily familiar to the last meeting between the two teams on June 7, Frederick defeated Salem 5-1 on Tuesday night at Lewis-Gale Field. Back in June, Zach Britton outdueled Bryan Price at Harry Grove Stadium to a 6-1 final, and tonight, Britton again flexed his dominant stuff against Price and the Sox in another Keys victory. Salem mustered just one unearned run on three hits over seven innings against Britton, who struck out seven and, for the first time this year, did not walk a single batter. Britton improved to 6-4 on the year and dropped his ERA to 2.66, second-best in the league. Salem has yet to score an earned run off Britton this season in three starts, a stretch of 18 innings for the southpaw.
Bryan Price retired eight of the first nine batters he faced, but the Keys broke through with two outs in the third inning. Matt Angle and Pedro Florimon belted back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0. Robbie Widlansky then reached on Will Vazquez' fielding error that allowed Florimon to score and the Keys led 2-0. Price made quick work of the Keys in the fourth and fifth, but Frederick strung together four hits off a fatigued Price in the sixth to score three times. The Sox had cut the deficit to 2-1 with an unearned tally in the fourth, but the Keys used a two-run double from Waring to jump up 4-1. Tyler Henson's RBI single to score Waring made it 5-1 and knocked Price out of the game. Although the Red Sox bullpen would not allow a run over three and two-thirds innings, Salem's offense was silent in the series opener.
The lone tally for the Sox came after Che-Hsuan Lin led off the last of the fourth with a single, a hit that preceded some shaky defense from the Keys. Zach Borowiak belted a line drive off the glove of Florimon at short that was ruled an errors. Two batters later, Yamaico Navarro flared a lazy pop to shallow left field. With the shortstop Florimon backing up and the left-fielder Henson coming in, Henson appeared to trap the baseball and Lin came home to score. The play was ruled a hit, giving Navarro an RBI.
Navarro finished 2-4 with two of Salem's four hits, all singles. Lin and Nava each went 1-4 for the Sox.
Neither pitching staff issued a walk in the ballgame. Pat Egan tossed the final two frames for the Keys in relief of Britton, while Armando Zerpa (two and two-thirds) and Josh Papelbon (one) blanked the Keys over the final innings after Price departed.
Salem looks to even the series on Wednesday night as Jose Capellan makes the start against Rick Zagone. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
