PORTLAND, Ore. - Dan Denham allowed no runs in 5 2/3 innings to earn his second consecutive victory as the Salt Lake Bees defeated the Portland Beavers 4-2 before 5,847 Sunday afternoon at PGE Park.
Denham (8-4) conceded just three hits over 5 2/3 scoreless innings, but was replaced after surrendering back-to-back walks with two outs in the sixth.
Brad Coon went 2-for-4 with a run scored, Ben Johnson gathered a pair of hits and an RBI and Nate Sutton and Sean Rodriguez each added RBI triples as the Bees (50-45) won their third game in a row.
Jose Arredondo struck out Danny Putnam with a man on first and second and two outs to get the Bees out of a jam in the sixth and then allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh.
Beavers starter Walter Silva (3-4) took his second straight loss after yielding three runs on six hits while striking out five in six innings of work.
Putnam blasted a two-run homer and Val Pascucci recorded a double and scored a run for the Beavers (43-52).
Portland threatened in the first frame as Russ Adams walked and then advanced to third on a two-out double by Pascucci. However, Denham forced Mike Baxter to fly out in the next at-bat to keep the Beavers off the scoreboard.
A leadoff single by Coon followed by consecutive triples from Sutton and Rodriguez gave the Bees a 2-0 lead with no outs in the sixth inning. Rodriguez scored from third two batters later on a groundout by Adam Pavkovich, stretching Salt Lake's advantage to three runs.
Pavkovich doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Johnson to increase the Bees' lead, 4-0.
Putnam hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth to bring the Beavers to within two, but closer Jeremy Hill struck out the next two batters to secure the win.
The Beavers travel to Reno Monday to begin a four-game series against the Aces. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. (Pacific)
