Checkers Assistant Coach, Mann Moves to AHL

CHARLOTTE, NC-Charlotte Checkers head coach and general manager, Derek Wilkinson announced today that associate head coach, Troy Mann has accepted the assistant coaching position with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. Hershey is the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League.

Mann, 39, goes to Hershey after serving as associate head coach of the Charlotte Checkers in 2008-09. Prior to his stint with the Checkers, Mann was the head coach and director of hockey operations of the Columbia Inferno (ECHL). His coaching career began as a player/assistant coach in the United Hockey League before he became an assistant coach and interim head coach of the Central Hockey League's Topeka Tarantulas in 2004-05.

Mann's 11-year professional playing career included a stint with the Mississippi SeaWolves in the ECHL, where he was the first player to sign with the franchise in 1996 and won the Kelly Cup while playing for Washington head coach Bruce Boudreau in 1999. Bob Woods was also a member of the 1999 SeaWolves, serving as both a player and an assistant coach. Mann is a 1993 graduate of the University of Toronto, where he played for the Varsity Blues.

Wilkinson adds, "We are very happy for Troy. This promotion is well deserved, and we wish him the best of luck in his new coaching endeavors."

The Checkers are getting ready for their 17th season of play as a member of the ECHL. In the team's 16-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 12 times including five consecutive playoff appearances to date.
