Crosscutters Snap Skid with 8-1 Victory

July 6, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL) - Williamsport Crosscutters News Release


GAME HIGHLIGHTS: Williamsport ended a season high three-game losing skid Monday night as they defeated State College by a score of 8-1 in front of 1,577 fans.

Spikes starter Ricardo Paulino (0-0, 3.71) was rolling through the first four innings not allowing a single Cutter to reach base.

In the bottom of the 5th Williamsport made sure there would be no perfect game or no-hitter as RF Micheal Dabbs hit a single to center for the Cutters first hit of the evening. Dabbs would steal second and then score on DH Francisco Murillo's RBI single to left.

The Cutters broke open the 1-0 pitchers duel in the bottom of the sixth when hot hitting SS Jeremy Barnes hit a grand slam to deep left center, his third home run of the season and first grand slam of his career. The grand slam was also the first for the Crosscutters this season.

Williamsport's starter Matt Way (1-0, 0.64) picked up his first professional victory as he pitched a masterful six innings of one hit ball while striking out five.

The Cutters added three runs in the bottom of the 7th when they once again loaded the bases for Barnes. This time Barnes worked a walk for his fifth RBI of the game. C Sebastian Valle then hit a 2-RBI single plating LF Carl Uhl and CF Leandro Castro with the seventh and eighth runs of the game.

Spikes 1B Justin Byler hit a solo shot in the top of the 8th off of Cutters relief RHP Austin Hyatt (0-0, 0.90) preventing the shutout. Hyatt picked up a three-inning save his third save of the year in relief. In three innings he allowed two hits and one run on Byler's home run. Hyatt struck out six of the nine Spikes he faced.

With the win, the Cutters even the SawBuck series at three games each. The Cutters and Spikes do not meet again until August 28.

The Crosscutters hit the road for a three-game series in Jamestown before returning home on Friday for a three-game home set vs. Auburn. All games can be heard on ESPN 1050AM, 104.1 FM and online at crosscutters.com
