Tennessee Smokies News Release
Zebulon, NC - The Carolina Mudcats belted two long balls and pounded the Tennessee Smokies 8-1 Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats (4-11) snapped a five game losing streak to the Smokies (8-7) before an announced crowd of 2,343.
The Mudcats got to the Smokies twice with the long ball. The first came off of Juan Francisco when he hammered an opposite field shot deep to right. The homerun scored Shaun Cumberland and Carson Kainer, who singled off Smokies' starter Hung-Wen Chen to begin the inning.
Holding a four run advantage in the eighth, Carolina's Brian Peterson gave his team a hefty advantage by hitting a towering grand slam to right center field off Jake Muyco.
Tennessee avoided the shutout by posting a run in the top of the ninth. Marquez Smith earned a one-out walk. He advanced to third on a double by Blake Lalli and scored on a groundout by Jim Adduci. It was the 35th RBI for Adduci.
Carolina never trailed after touching up Chen (4-7) for a run in the second inning. Jose Castro began the rally with a two-out single. He wheeled his way to third when Brian Peterson followed with a single to right. Tyler Colvin's throw that way was wild, allowing Castro to race home for the game's first run.
Chen pitched six innings in the start for Tennessee. He allowed the four runs on 10 Mudcat hits. He struck out three and walked one. Jayson Ruhlman worked one uneventful inning of relief for Tennessee. Brian Schlitter pitched two-thirds of an inning before being pulled due to an apparent injury. He left with the bases loaded after allowing two hits and a walk.
Matt Klinker (2-0) got the win with a scoreless six innings of work. He scattered three hits while retiring seven Smokies via strikeouts.
Tennessee returns to Smokies Park on Wednesday to face Montgomery. The Biscuits are the AA-affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays. The series will last four games, spanning July 8-11. Tickets can be purchased at the box office, by calling (865) 286-2300 or by visiting smokiesbaseball.com.
