Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (3-10) dropped the series opener 7-4 to the Tennessee Smokies (7-6) in front of an Independence Day crowd of 8,596, the fourth biggest crowd in Five County Stadium history.
Marquez Smith led the offensive charge for the Smokies, going 3-5 while scoring three times. Three other Smokies had multi-hit games. Ty Wright went 2-4, driving in three runs and scoring one.
Tennessee starter Andrew Cashner held Carolina to one run over five innings pitched, striking out six Mudcats. In the middle of a ninth inning Mudcat rally, reliever Jayson Ruhlman (S, 2) entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs, inducing an Eric Eymann fly ball to end the game.
