Early Deficit Costs Suns in Independence Day Loss

Pearl, Miss. - The Mississippi Braves (37-45, 6-6) tagged Jacksonville Suns (43-40, 8-4) starter Graham Taylor for eight earned runs over three and two-thirds innings as t he Braves held on for an 8-6 victory in front of 7,036 Saturday night at Trustmark Park.

Braves reliever Tim Gustafson (1-0) picked up the victory after dealing four hitless innings. Mississippi starter Kyle Cofield gave up five runs and eight hits over eight innings of work without a decision. Taylor (4-6) allowed eight earned runs, five hits and five walks over three and two-thirds innings for the loss. Jerome Gamble (2) saved the game, giving up a run over two innings to close the game.

Jacksonville opened the scoring in the firs tinning on a Logan Morrison single, driving in Ryan Klosterman for a 1-0 score. In the bottom of the first inning, Suns starter Graham Taylor walked the first three hitters before two ground balls allow ed two runs two score for a 2-1 Braves lead.

The Suns tied the game in the top of the second inning on a Taylor sacrifice fly, knocking home Chris Hatcher for a 2-2 score. Mississippi regained the lead with a three-run second as runs scored on a fielder's choice from Kyle Cofield, Brandon Hicks sacrifice fly and Jason Heyward triple for a 5-2 Braves advantage.

Jacksonville tied the game again in the third inning, as Mike Stanton scored first on a throwing error for a 5-3 score. Lorenzo Scott later drove in a pair of runs on a single to tie the game 5-5.

Mississippi took the lead for good in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Concepcion Rodriguez and two-run hit fro m Eric Campbell for an 8-5 lead.

Logan Morrison led off the Suns ninth inning with his fourth Double-A homerun, ending the scoring at 8-6.
