Portland Beavers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - Walter Silva struck out seven and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, Matt Antonelli was 3-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs and the Portland Beavers defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 7-1 before 6,032 Friday night at PGE Park.
Silva (3-2), who held the Grizzlies (34-27) to just one hit and two walks over seven strong innings, did not allow a hit until Ben Copeland led off the sixth with a double down the right field line. Silva also hit a batter while retiring 21 of 25 batters faced.
Kyle Blanks and Drew Macias each had two hits and an RBI for the Beavers, who out-hit Fresno 10-3 to even their homestand record at 3-3.
Fresno starter Steve Hammond (3-5) yielded five runs, six hits and three walks in 5 2/3 innings in the loss, his third in three starts against Portland this season.
The Beavers (31-31) got back-to-back walks by Vincent Sinisi and Blanks while Macias followed with an RBI single to start the scoring in the first. Antonelli's solo homer off Hammond the next inning gave Portland a 2-0 lead.
Antonelli drew a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fifth, scoring on a two-out single through the left side of the infield by Craig Stansberry. After Sinisi was hit by a pitch, Blanks dropped a single into shallow right to enable Stansberry to score and make it 4-0.
In the sixth, Antonelli followed Eliezer Alfonzo's two-out double with a run-scoring single to center.
The Grizzlies broke up the Beavers' shutout bid in the eighth, as pinch-hitter Clay Timpner doubled off reliever Mike Ekstrom and scored on an RBI single from Matt Downs.
Portland added insurance in the eighth when Blanks scored on Alfonzo's sac fly to left and Antonelli added an RBI double.
The Beavers play host the Grizzlies again Saturday night at PGE Park. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
