Mercury Adds Ketia Swanier To Roster

June 3, 2009 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) Phoenix Mercury

PHOENIX - The Phoenix Mercury today announced the acquisition of guard Ketia Swanier. Swanier, known for her speed as a ball-handler, will join team workouts on Thursday, June 3.

Originally selected by the Connecticut Sun in the first round (12th overall) of the 2008 WNBA Draft, Swanier appeared in 25 games during her rookie campaign, making six starts. She posted averages of 1.6 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 9.2 minutes last season. This year the 5-8, 150-pound guard appeared in all three Sun preseason games before being waived on June 1.

"I was impressed by Ketia last season in her ability to push the ball up the court," said Head Coach Corey Gaines. "She came from a great collegiate program, and her style of play fits our system well."

A 2008 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Swanier earned the inaugural BIG EAST Sixth Man of the Year Award as a senior after leading the conference with a 2.10 assist to turnover ratio. She finished her collegiate career as the only player in school history to rank among the top 10 career leaders in games played (142), assists (479) and steals (247).

The Phoenix Mercury presented by LifeLock tips off the 2009 season on Saturday, June 6 vs. the San Antonio Silver Stars. Tickets for the home opener are on sale now and start at just $10. The first 6,000 through the doors on opening night will receive a commemorative T-shirt courtesy of the Arizona Lottery.
