West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars got a sacrifice fly from Grant Desme in the eighth inning to edge the West Michigan Whitecaps, 6-5, at Elfstrom Stadium on Sunday night. The Cougars came back from a 5-2 deficit to claim game two of the three game series.
Sunday night's game began with Kane County jumping in front, 2-0, in the second. Consecutive doubles by Steve Kleen and Grant Desme produced the first run. Petey Paramore's RBI hit with one out brought home Desme for the second.
The Whitecaps answered with a run in the top of the third on Brandon Douglas' sacrifice fly to plate Gustavo Nunez.
The 'Caps strung together four runs in the fourth as they sent 9 men to the plate. Three walks and four hits put the Whitecaps ahead, 5-2. Avisail Garcia's two-run single was the critical at-bat.
But that would be the end of the Whitecaps' scoring. Kane County reliever Matt Fitts entered in the fourth inning with two outs and shut down the 'Caps.
Kane County drew within two runs with an RBI hit by Steve Kleen that scored Dusty Coleman. The Cougars tied the game, 5-5, in the seventh when Petey Paramore walked and Jeremy Barfield singled. Dusty Napoleon put down a sacrifice bunt, and Matt Ray came through with a two-out, two-run single off reliever Erik Crichton to plate Paramore and Barfield.
The Cougars' Dusty Coleman led off the eighth with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Desme drove a fastball to straight away center to bring home Coleman and give Kane County the lead, 6-5.
West Michigan starter Mark Sorensen threw well but did not get rewarded for it. He went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs, 7 hits and 6 strikeouts. Reliever Luis Sanz (0-1) took the loss.
Matt Fitts (1-5) worked 4.1 innings for the win for Kane County.
Gustavo Nunez and Brent Wyatt each had two hits. Dusty Coleman was 4-4 with a double and a triple.
Game three, the rubber game, of the series is set for 2:00 EST on Monday afternoon at Elfstrom Stadium.
