Bridgeport, Conn. - Chris Minard and Jeff Taffe tallied the two goals for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in their 2-1 victory over the Sound Tigers to take a 3-games-to-1 lead in their East Division Semi-Final series. Ben Walter was credited with the lone goal for the Sound Tigers, coming on the power-play in the third period. Peter Mannino was in goal for the second straight game and stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced.
Under five minutes to play in the first period, Minard was able to grab a 1-0 lead for the Penguins. Taffe snapped a shot on goal that rattled behind the net and popped out at the right post. Minard was there to tap in his fourth tally of the post-season. Alex Goligoski also had an assist on the play.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton increased their lead to two goals just 1:25 into the middle frame when Taffe cashed in for the Penguins on the power-play. Jean-Michel Daoust fed a saucered pass over a Sound Tiger defenseman to Taffe at the back-door for the easy one-time shot into the back of the net. Mark Letestu had the second assist on Taffe's second goal of the playoffs.
The Sound Tigers would cut the Penguins lead in half late in the third period when Walter tipped his first marker of the post-season through Wilkes-Barre/Scranton starting goalie, John Curry. Jon Sim set the play in the Penguins' zone then fed a pass to Chris Lee at the top of the point. Lee fired a slap-shot that Walter deflected past Curry to close out the game's scoring at 2-1 in favor of the Penguins.
Mannino suffered the loss, his first of the playoffs, turning aside 19 shots while Curry made 32 saves. The Sound Tigers were 1-for-5 on the man-advantage and went 4-for-5 on the penalty-kill.
Game 5 is set for Friday night at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, PA at 7:05 p.m. If necessary, the Sound Tigers and Penguins will play Game 7 of their best-of-seven series on Sunday evening at 4 p.m. at Arena at Harbor Yard.
