Eight former Kernels on Angels' Opening Day Roster

April 5, 2009 - Eight former Cedar Rapids Kernels will be in an Angels' uniform when 2009 season begins Monday night in the Angels' home opener against the Oakland Athletics.

Angels General Manager, Tony Reagins, made the announcement on Saturday as the team broke Spring Training in Tempe, AZ.

The eight former Kernels are: pitchers Nick Adenhart, Kevin Jepsen, Joe Saunders and Scot Shields; catchers Jeff Mathis and Mike Napoli; and infielders Erick Aybar and Howie Kendrick.

Two other former Kernels, pitchers John Lackey and Ervin Santana, will begin the 2009 season on the 15-day disabled list.

The 2009 Cedar Rapids Kernels are scheduled to break minor league Spring Training today and are scheduled to arrive in Cedar Rapids Monday night at 4 pm.

The annual 'Meet the Kernels Night' is scheduled for Tuesday, April 7th starting at 5:00 pm as the Kernels will take on Kirkwood Community College in a scrimmage beginning at 5:30 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12-under and includes an all-you-can-eat ballpark-style meal served until 8:00 pm. Live music, provided by Adam and the 11th Street Boys, will be on the concourse from 8:00 until 10 pm with a cash bar available.

The Kernels open the 2009 MWL season against Beloit on Thursday, April 9th. Game time is 6:35 pm at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
