South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks, in conjunction with the Arizona Diamondbacks, have announced their 2009 Opening Day Roster. Fans first chance to see this year's version of the Silver Hawks is Tuesday evening, when South Bend battles the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in an exhibition game at Coveleski Stadium beginning at 5:30 PM.

Manager Mark Haley's pitching staff will be highlighted by LHP Wade Miley and RHP Jordan Meaker. Miley was a supplemental first round pick (43rd overall) by the Diamondbacks in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft and compiled a 1-1 record with a 4.91 ERA in seven games with Yakima last season. Meaker, a 20th round selection, anchored the Yakima bullpen in 2008 with six saves and a 1.47 ERA.

At the plate, the Silver Hawks will rely on the power of INF Nelson Gomez. Selected in the 24th round last June, Gomez led Missoula with 10 home runs and 45 RBI. Joining Gomez in the infield is Indiana native Justin Parker, the younger brother of former Silver Hawks pitcher Jarrod Parker.

The Silver Hawks return the entire coaching staff from 2008, with Haley returning to South Bend for his fifth season as skipper of the Hawks. Pitching coach Erik Sabel and hitting coach Francisco Morales both return for a second season in South Bend.

A full roster with uniform numbers will be released when the players arrive in South Bend.
