
66ers Defeat Jam, Win Fourth Straight

Tulsa, Okla., March 29, 2009 - The Tulsa 66ers utilized a 50-21 advantage in bench scoring to defeat the Bakersfield Jam 98-91 on Sunday at the SpiritBank Event Center. The win was Tulsa's fourth straight and was the second straight defeat for the Jam. Gary Forbes led the 66ers with a team-high 19 points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
"We played really well as a team tonight," 66ers Head Coach Paul Woolpert said. "Bakersfield is a good team and they made it interesting at the end, but I'm proud of our players for finishing the game."
After a first quarter that saw three lead changes and five ties, the 66ers jumped on top during a five minute stretch midway in the second, with an 11-1 run capped by a Keith Clark three-pointer that put them ahead 41-31 with 3:52 remaining in the first half. Mateen Cleaves scored eight of his 12 first half points in the second period, which helped to keep the Jam within reach, at 47-41 at halftime. Tulsa shot 21-for-42 (50 percent) in the first half, while the Jam shot 19-for-45 (42.2 percent).
Forbes scored 13 points in the third quarter alone, as the 66ers shot 52.4 percent (11-21) in the period. Moses Ehambe capped off an 11-2 run by the 66ers, with a layup, to put them up 71-54 with 43 seconds remaining in the period.
The Jam pulled to within 75-65 with 8:56 remaining in the game, after a Trey Johnson jumper and Terrell Everett lay in. Tulsa rallied with an 11-4 run to extend to their biggest advantage of the game at 19 points, with the score 86-67 with 5:13 remaining. Gary Ervin went 6-of-8, and Ehambe hit his only two free throw attempts of the game down the stretch to seal the victory for Tulsa.
Led by Forbes, Tulsa had four of their six players that scored in double figures come off the bench. Keith Clark, in a starting role, finished with his tenth double-double of the season, with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Ervin finished with 17 points and seven rebounds, while Derrick Dial added 12 points, Ryan Humphrey contributed 11 and Ehambe put up 10 points.
The Jam were led by Cleaves, with a game-high 26 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Trey Johnson scored 14, and Derrick Byars added 13 points and seven rebounds. Justin Reed had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Bakersfield (25-21) returns home for a two-game home stand against Utah on Mar. 31 and Anaheim on Apr. 4, before finishing the regular season at Idaho on Apr. 8 and 10.
Tulsa (13-32) heads to Austin on Wednesday, Apr. 1 before returning for the home finale on Apr. 3 against Colorado. The 66ers finish the regular season on the road at Fort Wayne on Apr. 5 and at Albuquerque on Apr. 10 and 11.
