Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA, Pa - The Altoona Curve are pleased to announce that Pittsburgh Steelers' linebacker and Super Bowl XLIII Champion LaMarr Woodley will be on hand at Blair County Ballpark for the team's Home Opener on Thursday, April 16 at 6:35 p.m. against the Erie SeaWolves.
Woodley will throw out the night's ceremonial first pitch, sign free autographs on the concourse during the game and participate in the Curve GameDay Show which will be simulcast on the ballpark's video board and the team's radio network.
"We're thrilled to welcome LaMarr Woodley to Blair County Ballpark," said Curve General Manager Rob Egan. "LaMarr is a rising star in the NFL and was a key contributor to a record-setting team this year. It will mean so much to our fans to have the chance to meet him."
Woodley's appearance will mark the first time that the Curve have had a Super Bowl champion appear at Blair County Ballpark the same year his respective team was crowned champion.
"Most Curve fans are Steelers fans so this was a very easy decision for us," said Egan. "LaMarr will quickly find out that Curve fans are just as passionate as any other fans he'll encounter."
In his second season in the NFL in 2008, Woodley established himself as one of the league's most promising stars at his position. The Steelers' second round draft choice (46th overall) in 2007 from the University of Michigan, Woodley and fellow linebacker James Harrison formed a duo that was widely considered one of the best linebacking tandems in recent NFL history.
Woodley was able to cap off a remarkable season with a crucial play that helped the Steelers preserve their record sixth Super Bowl championship when he sacked Arizona Cardinals' quarterback Kurt Warner late in the fourth quarter.
Altogether, Woodley's post-season performance was one of the best ever turned in by a linebacker. He tallied six sacks - two each in three-straight post-season games (AFC Divisional Game vs. San Diego, the AFC Championship Game vs. Baltimore and the Super Bowl), becoming the first player in NFL history to record three consecutive multi-sack playoff games.
Woodley was pictured on the cover of the December 22 issue of Sports Illustrated, which featured an article about the 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers defense.
More information about Woodley can be found on his official website, www.lamarrwoodley56.com.
Fans can reserve their seats for the 2009 Home Opener -- presented by M&T Bank -- and their chance to meet Woodley at the team's Baseball Bash on Friday, March 13 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Individual tickets for the 2009 season will go on sale for the first time that evening. Fans can also enjoy a great deal of festivities throughout the night such as a fireworks show and a chance to win a pair of 2009 Grandstand season tickets via the team's "out-STANDING Fan" competition.
