Atlanta, February 2, 2009-The Atlanta Dream will celebrate the 23rd annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 4, 2009 with a series of community events planned for the entire week. The Dream will join thousands of sports educators, coaches, athletic directors, students and parents across the country in honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in athletics. This year's theme is "Look Who's Playing."
Monday, February 2: Dream Executive Vice President Danielle Donehew will serve as the guest speaker at Kennesaw State University's annual Bobbie Bailey Awards ceremony, honoring the accomplishments of local high school female athletes. Donehew is a native of the Atlanta area and was an Academic All-American at Georgia Tech. She will be the first ever Bobbie Bailey Award recipient to return to KSU as the guest speaker for the event.
Tuesday, February 3: The Dream brings High School Halftime Mania to Berkmar High School. Tip-off is at 6 pm as Berkmar takes on Parkview High School. The program, co-sponsored by Coca-Cola, encourages fans to support their local girls' varsity basketball teams, by bringing the halftime excitement of an Atlanta Dream game to high school gyms across the metro Atlanta area. The program is hosted by Dream in-game host CJ from 95.5 the Beat and includes appearances by Dream center Chantelle Anderson, members of the Shooting Stars cheer team and the official team mascot Star (when available). Special giveaway items will be provided commemorating National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
Wednesday, February 4: In partnership with GoGirlGo! Atlanta, the Dream will host an Open House at Panola Way Elementary. Dream center Chantelle Anderson will speak to a group of 80 female students about the importance of being physically active. The girls will also participate in fitness activities including dance, aerobics and a GoGirlGo! Lesson. Each participant will receive a special co-branded jump rope, t-shirts and frisbees.
Friday, February 6: The Dream brings High School Halftime Mania to Hillgrove High School. Tip-off is at 6 pm as Hillgrove takes on Woodland High School. Saturday, February 7, 2009: The Dream will host a basketball clinic at Carrollton High School. Special giveaway items will be provided commemorating 2009 National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Registration can be completed at www.AtlantaDream.net.
Also on Saturday, former WNBA player and Dream community ambassador Rushia Brown will participate in fitness clinics as part of Sports Day Celebration, an event co-presented by LADYS, Inc., NW Girls Scouts and the Clayton County Parks and Recreation Department in celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
Since its creation in 1987, National Girls and Women in Sports Day has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
