Windham Named Sun Team Of The Week

December 30, 2008 - Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) Connecticut Sun

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (December 30, 2008) - Windham High School in Willimantic has been selected as the Connecticut Sun High School Girls' Basketball Team of the Week, presented by WFSB Channel 3 and Friday Night Frenzy, in association with Camaro Signs of Yantic, for the week of Dec. 22-28.

The Whippets started the week with a 74-40 victory over Woodstock Academy on Dec.22nd. With 1:26 remaining in the third quarter, Windham senior Amie Toner scored her 1,000th career point on a jumper. Toner, who will attend Sacred Heart on scholarship next year, finished the game with 24 points.

After a 62-41 win over New London on Dec. 23rd, the Whippets headed to Florida, where they defeated Pierce County, Ga., 59-49, on Dec. 27th in the KSA Disney Invitational in Orlando. Toner had a double-double in the victory with 23 points and 12 rebounds while Ali Risley added 11 points for Windham.

This is the third season the Connecticut Sun has recognized a Team of the Week. Each winner will receive a commemorative plaque and a congratulatory letter from Connecticut Sun coach Mike Thibault.

The Team of the Week is part of a series of initiatives undertaken by the Connecticut Sun to highlight local high school girls' basketball, where future WNBA stars are already competing. The Sun also host a CIAC Championship luncheon, and recognize the four CIAC Class champions during a ceremony at halftime of a regular season game.

The Sun have been one of the most successful teams in the WNBA, winning more games than any team in the league since 2003 and have qualified for the playoffs every year. Season ticket plans for 2009 are on sale now and can be reserved by calling a Sun Ticket Sales Representative at 1.877.SUN.TIXX, e-mailing the Sun at tickets@connecticutsun.com or visiting www.connecticutsun.com.
